TRIB: Truckers can save money with retreads

PACIFIC GROVE, CA, April 2008 - retread.org
Unfortunately, far too many truckers and others still think that rubber on the road (also called tire debris or road alligators) is caused by retreads. The facts are quite different from the mistaken perception that these people have, and that’s too bad, because it keeps many truckers and others from even thinking about using retreads. This is costing them money and it is also not helping the environment.

LET’S LOOK AT THE FACTS
• The true cause of nearly all the rubber on the road is IMPROPER TIRE MAINTENANCE. Tires that are improperly maintained, regardless of whether they are retreads or have never been retreaded WILL FAIL given enough time. It’s not a question of if they will fail; it’s when they will fail.

• Much of the rubber on the road on any given day comes from tires that have never been retreaded. New tires come apart with the same frequency as retreads if they are improperly maintained, and when they do, they leave a trail of rubber on the road.

• Tires that have improperly repaired are prone to failure and this also causes rubber on the road. The importance of proper tire repairs cannot be emphasized enough. When a tire has a puncture it MUST be repaired off the wheel from the inside, and NOT by just inserting a plug from the outside of the tire. Again, it doesn’t matter if the tire is a retread or one that has never been retreaded. Improperly repaired tires are a danger to everyone and are a major cause of tire failure, leaving a trail of tire debris on our highways.

• Underinflation, overloading, mismatching of tires on dual wheel positions, misaligned vehicles leading to irregular tire wear, tires that are still being driven when there is less than the legal limit of tread remaining; these all contribute to rubber on the road.

RETREADS CAN CUT YOUR TIRE COSTS BY AS MUCH AS 50%, AND SOMETIMES EVEN MORE
• The high cost of fuel and the weak state of the economy is putting a serious burden on all motorists, with truckers being especially hurt. If you are one who is afraid of retreads, it’s time to change your thinking.

• Retreads being produced by top quality retreaders in modern retread plants have a failure rate often LOWER than comparable new tires, and at a far lower cost. Don’t believe it? We can prove it. Let us show you how.

• If you want to drive GREEN, you really should be using retreads for your fleet, whether it’s a fleet of one truck or a thousand. Retreaded tires are one of the most environmentally friendly recycled products you will ever use. Thanks to retreads, more than 400 million gallons of oil are saved in North America every year. And this is in addition to hundreds of millions of pounds of other raw materials such as steel, carbon black, zinc stearate, antioxidants and other materials that go into the manufacture of new tires.

We are a non-profit industry association and our main mission is to promote the economic and environmental benefits of retreaded tires and proper tire repairing. We will be happy to send you a free Retread Tire Information Packet, including a CD & DVD. We will also be happy to arrange a tour of a modern retread plant in your area. We are so confident you will find the tour worth your time; we will make a donation to your favorite charity if you tell us the tour was a waste of your time. No questions asked.

We are serious and we make this offer because we are convinced that you will come away impressed after you tour the plant of one of our members, regardless of whether or not you decide to use retreads.

We can be reached toll free from anywhere in North America at 888-473-8732 or by email at: info@retread.org.
