Ashland, OR — November 19, 2008 - Southbound Interstate 5 traffic will encounter intermittent rolling slowdowns as ODOT performs rock scaling operations along the Siskiyou Pass today - Wednesday, November 19. The work is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. and continue throughout the day as necessary.

“We use rolling slowdowns as a safety measure,” said ODOT District Manager Jerry Marmon. “Sometimes, the scaling operation causes a rock to roll out across the highway. The slowdowns allow us to clear debris off the road before traffic resumes.

“We’ve had two rockslides on Siskiyou Pass earlier this month, so we want to clear away any loose material while the weather is still in our favor.”

During an I-5 slowdown, traffic is escorted by an ODOT pilot vehicle. Advance reader boards are placed along I-5. Drivers can expect intermittent 10-minute delays.

Road condition updates are available at www.Tripcheck.com or by calling 511. Road and weather information can be accessed toll-free within Oregon by dialing (800) 977-ODOT (6368).

[MEDIA NOTE: The scaling operation is dangerous. Media should wear hard hats and reflective vests in the work zone. If you want photos and/or video, please contact ODOT PIO Gary Leaming at 541-621-3074 to arrange a safety escort to the work area.]
